Journal of Conservative Dentistry Vol.7 No.3 (Jul-Sep 2004)

One fine evening, my youngest son, who is in his tenth class, casually discussed his teachers and said, Papa, one of our teachers just reads .from the book and never makes us understand the text. In case any question is asked, the usual reply is, "Everything is given in the books, read them thoroughly". This type of apathy is not only with younger children, but also with professional students (precisely in dentistry).

The concept of aptitude of teaching is nowhere followed, while appointing teachers. With the opening of so many dental colleges and the requirements of Dental Council of India, the teachers are appointed without their inherent interest in teaching. Usually the teachers financial standing and the interests other than teaching has led to utter lack of dedication, accountability, pride in profession and care for students.

The criteria of 'quality management' is required to be an inherent component of the education system. The growing menace of tuition culture in professional colleges has also worsened the situation. Every educational institution should be screened for quality management and the teachers be trained off and on, to carry out their responsibilities in a better way. Sadly uptil now, there is no system of training the teachers, whether senior or junior.

Let us hope our teachers will he educated further to help improve the quality and pride of our worthy profession.
